Let your fingers tap up your musical skill!

This summer I have been working on tango and my efforts were divided into movements and music. I do not have the science to back up my opinion here but I am sure that if I tap through the song my hearing process is going develop. Subjectively I notice how much easier it becomes to recognize how the music goes. I recognize the changes faster and they grow more clear day by day.

During these training weeks I have used some of the examples juanayjulio channel has published. They have done a tremendous job by choosing the songs, fixing the rhythmical visualizations and giving us suggestions for the steps! It has been a good help for me this summer. Basically I sit on the sofa with my laptop and start my playlist. When the clip plays I tap with my fingers the rhythm suggested. Not anything advanced here but just one finger from each hand is participating! I had to test a few times to find the most comfortable finger combination but now it is working fine and it is a relaxed moment in the morning.

This is part of my pajamas training in the morning with coffee on the side table. The morning coffee is very regular for me and the same has this training become!

I list some of the songs below so you get an idea of the possibilities. There are some other songs where I do hear the rhythms differently, the patterns do not continue in the same way through the whole phrase or something. For me these *disagreements* were wellcome showing that my own hearing starts to stand out and now I let my fingers play as the music feels for me.

Later on I will also try to learn the steps juanayjulio suggest on the videos!

Why not support your training with mental actions on the sofa!

Many artists, sportspersons mix their physical training with mental activities - so WHY NOT in tango? To systematically and regularly review the class summaries and repeat, rehearse the movements in your mind will support your development! I describe below how I do today and you can pick what you think could develop your dance.

All stuff at one place keeps me organized

As I mentioned earlier I am in the process of collecting all my workshop content and youtube favorites to a google sheet that I call for Figure Library. I am halfway now with a few hundred entries. Having all this stuff in one place gives me better control on my coming learning. In the Library I have given every figure a name or a short description that identifies it. We are used to it - we started with ochos and americanas, didn't we! For me just reading the list of the figures activates the memory and reveals parts I have forgotten but it's easy to click the url and see the video again. When the library got larger it has been easier to use google mail to organize the review process!

Fast rehearsing with Gmail!

I choose the entries I want to work with and copy the two Library columns - figure name and url - and paste it to a gmail and send it to myself. When I open the mail I can read the names and recall the sequences. There are also corresponding video thumpnails at the bottom of the mail and this offers the fastest way to run a video review. You click the first one, it opens and starts to play at the timestamp by a click on the space bar. After one or two seconds I move to the next video by clicking on the arrow at the right side.
If you want to repeat click the letter J which takes you a few seconds backward. You can also check possibilities with  H L > < for easier navigation. Sorry to say but sometimes they don't respond - I don't know why - but a click on the video seems to activate the controls again.

This works really well for videos when you have only one figure on it. Sometimes I have several, but gmail offers just the first one on the list. On my lucky day I saved the earliest occurrence first and then I could continue to watch until the last timestamp was shown.

If you want to maintain 100 figures, maybe your content for one year,  you create just four emails for rehearsing. These emails have an individual URL address that you can paste in your calendar or you can save them in a folder at the Bookmarks bar. Just choose the day when you want to work on them! . . . . and this is scalable! In four years you have maybe 400 interesting figures to keep alive for the practica. What do you think?

All above is for youtube videos but I have saved facebook videos as well. However for them I don't have the time stamp function. I have read somewhere that this option exists but I have not managed to activate it. So today I save the figure with information about the moment it starts. Primitive but keeps me going!

Tango gym or repertoire training?

This training of figures is not for bringing all these patterns to a pista. It is based on a different way of thinking. It has lot of similarities with the gym or pilates workouts where I build my muscles and keep my flexibility by repeating a variety of movements. During those workouts I can do moves which I never use in my everyday life but the time I spend on mats and machines has had a positive general impact on my life. In the same way figure training has had a positive impact on my dance, increased the variety of different movements, mobility as well as my readiness for some new combinations in my dance.

My goal

When I start to work on a group of figures I have given them a starting skill value 0. To complete this level I have to know and be able to take the leader steps AND in my mind match them to the followers corresponding movements. This is the only limit I have clear now so the following levels will be defined later. There will be training to fix the figure to different music and to be able to keep the figure going on with distraction. After that I think I am ready to introduce them to a follower at a practica. This is the goal and I don't force these figures to turn up on a milonga flor. My experience so far is that they sometimes show up as fragments on a milonga and some easy ones can turn up as they are during a tanda.

My Solo training heading to the PRACTICA

After said that my practice is build up like this! I update weekly the material I want to review and train. There are technique videos, music training, groups of old figures and sometimes totally new figure groups. I also decide how much time I have for this training.

During the week I watch the videos once a day and review the figures in my mind. Even this means 10 repetitions a week. There are a few fundamental movements I physically do every morning and I keep them going for weeks before a change. A figure group which I know well can be run once or twice a week solo at home. With other words there are a lot of visual and mental activities on the sofa and some footwork on the floor!

My Figures library & Co

I wrote earlier about my collection of figures to show you how I save and easily find back to my favorite figures. But still, these figures are not the chosen ones! That collection is a kind of waiting room for nice moves. I collect and maintain these rows for the day I want to have some new movements or variation on the old giros in my daily dance. Some of these suggestions will never advance to the spreadsheet I call for FIG library. On this spreadsheet I keep the figures I have seriously worked on! Most of the videos show moves from my workshops but my favorites from youtube channels are also included.

FIG library

For these videos I like to have some more information. Sometimes it has been interesting to check the year and month when the steps were initiated to my dance or when I  was working on them for the first time. It has been fun to check what was going on in 2009? What teachers I had then? Just use the filter for that column and you have the information. There is also a column to group the figures, usually about 20-30 rows/items to go together, based on the teacher but sometimes on a theme as canyengue or something. These groups I can easily dance through during a tanda on a practica. At the beginning I made an MP3 file telling me every 20s a new move and for a tango tanda 26 was a good number. Today I try to memorize the lists instead.

The column NUMBER is useful when I have filtered a selection and need to know how many items fit the criteria. No counting of rows but I just place the cursor on the column top letter and in a click I can read the result in the right down corner. Easy and fast!

When I decide to work on a figure in the Collection I cut-copy it and paste it to the Fig library. With other words I add it to the Library and remove it from the Collection.

You maybe want to have all your stuff on one sheet and it is totally up to you. If you change your mind later you can separate them into two sheets. You can still keep them together in the same workbook. There is a tab for each of them as you see at the bottom of the picture.

If you click the picture above it opens up in a new window and you see it clearly!

Teacher Notes and other observations

It was too easy to forget what the teacher has told me during a private lesson or on a workshop. I maybe had the correction in mind for some time but afterward I just continue in the old way. Now I write a line for everything I hear from her or him and I read these notes regularly to remind me of the changes needed.

There are labels like body lead attitude abrazo . . . . .
The second level labels are Hand arm foot leg hip timing . . . .

When I read these notes I remember vividly what it was about and hopefully it will develop and come to daylight on some milonga in the future!

Today I am also experimenting with a new sheet for repetitions of the groups in the FIG Library. It is annoying to participate, pay the fee, traveling and stay but forget the most of the content later on. This sheet is for my solo training and it will carry information about my activities so I know what content I have repeated on a specific week. I can easily check if something needs to be repeated again and in this way I don't forget a group of favorites! Coming back about this when I feel that it is working ok!

I use here also the freezed headings and filtering functions. This video shows shortly how!

Basic training for November - December

This will be the last period of training for 2014!

My Pilates will be the workout from the very beginning. I just love her knowledge and talk!

For the other days I have picked one more Fitnessblender workouts. She uses small weights which is maybe too much. I maybe test with some small bottles to try out the moves.

November you are Welcome! I am prepared!

Basic training for September - October

My training has been going on 12 months so this program starts a NEW YEAR

I started last September but first in February I updated this blog with the links to the training videos. I think the best result has been that my strength is now enough to keep me dancing for several hours. The most valuable result is still the spontaneous comment from my sisters grown up daughter - She could see the muscles around my shoulders!

Actually that is a small problem for me! I do not want big muscles, just lean ones with strength for dancing long hours. I am monitoring this and asking people advice. I need these morning workouts to push up my low blood pressure and start the day

I will use this Pilates series. It is totally about one hour with two separate half-hour workshops. I will keep my 30 minutes limit and do the first part on Monday and the second later on the week.

The easy cardio will land on Tuesday and Friday.

Follow up for September - 2014.10.03
I think these cardio sessions are the best thing happening for my dance now. The balance training in March-April did wake up the tiny muscles in the ankles and they are growing slowly as recommended for me. Pilates is good for the core but leaves the ankles and the rest of the legs with insufficient training.

Earlier I had a strong wobbling solo caminata but today I can walk alone in much more controlled way. For me this is a great progress and it will make the life easier for my followers too. I can also do 360 degree stable turn on one leg and it is ok for left and right leg.

Basic training for July - August

With this July-August period I will close a whole year training! In September we will open a totally new training year.

For this period I have switched the fitness and pilates parts so there will be only two pilates days per week. I really need more fitness part

Pilates with Rene on Mondays and Saturdays!

Cardio will happen Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays!

If you don't find these two hard enough there is lot of alternatives take some of them!  :))

Comment 2014.08.30

This morning was the last day for these exercises and on Monday I will test a new set of movements. It has been a good period and I have done the training nearly every morning - traveling days excluded.

I totally love the FitnesBlenders serie - the lady in yellow T-shirt - it is so well done and my body is stretched and stronger after the training. I will pick one of their work-outs for next period too!

The pilates workout has been ok but quite boring. I have skipped the back plank - you are sitting on the floor and then lifting your hips up having your weight on hands and heels. I got some back pain during the period and it disappeared when I skipped this movement.

Basic training for May - June

There has been a 3 week vacation with no other motion but walking and dancing. Two weeks abroad with sighthseeing and dancing. The lazy start after coming home took me to last monday!

There will be my loved pilates and a cardio section for the basic training. No changes there!

For pilates I have searched and found a 30 mins workshop in spanish! I notised earlier that I learned to recognize a lot of words from my Russian Callanetics video and now I am hoping same kind of effect while working my body in Spanish!

For some reason I could not link the Pilates videos here but please check the picture below and if interesting click the video playlist below. Part 1 and Part 2 about 30 mins together!

The cardio part is still in Enlish!  :)

The Pilates part will be run Monday-Wednesday and the cardio Friday-Saturday as usual!

BALANCE Week 3

Because my ankles are in need of extra support and because my knees still complain I will go on with the earlier balance training only once this week and keep up with the video for the ankles for the other days. I  noticed that without any planing I find myself doing the rising/lowering the heels movements. Some extra training that too!

This will be my companion for days 1/2/3 and 5

This will be my companion for day 6

This training is for my body and yours is maybe different needing something else.

Listen to your body!

BALANCE Week 2

This training is for my body and yours is maybe different needing something else.

Listen to your body!

Because my ankles turned out to be in need of extra support and because my knees were complaining I will go on with the earlier balance training only two times this week and add a video for the ankles for the days in between. I will have only a moderate ambitions level!

This will be my companion for days 1/2 and 5

This will be my companion for days 3 and 6

But I will be doing  only the ones before the ball comes in.

BALANCE Week 1

When I was wondering what to focus on during coming weeks the answer was BALANCE.
I have had bad balance down to very bad balance for all my dancing years. One teacher told me that if I could stop using my feet as Charlie Chaplin my dance would be actually beautiful. BUT i could not; I needed that extra support.

This article about the three different systems administering the balance process is short and gives you a picture  how fantastic orchestra is needed to keep you standing!

http://physicaltherapy.about.com/od/Physical-Therapy-For-Seniors/a/Where-Does-Balance-Come-From.htm

Your muscles needs to be trained too, they are anyhow doing the rough job. If  there is 12 mins available we could invest those minutes on our muscles to create balance! (I skip the training with ball, I do not have any.) I wonder if my Proprioceptive system will be developed now, maybe I get some new cells or the old ones will be trimmed to top level!

Happy training for March!

Comments on the training Week 1.

I managed to run this through three times during the week and I am happy about that; seven days would have ruined my body. During last night's milonga something happened with my knee, I can not tell what but there was something and I think the strain to catch up the whole body, when my ankles were not doing their job properly, was too much for all the small stuff in the knee.

My left and right leg were in totally different shape. Standing on my left leg I managed to do only 2/3 repetitions before I needed to make a fresh start. On the right side my repetitions were doubled or more before I did a touch down.

My core was ok and it is logical after all that pilates training and I will not continue with that part of the video. My weakest points are the ankles and there the left one needs extra help to get in shape. It is not about a bad ankle but about my bad training habits!

The most surprising during the week was how fast my muscles started to cooperate. The  ankles are still trembling, but they keep up for a rising number of repetitions.

Basic Training for March - April

I strongly recommend you to have some kind of training routine for basic cardio and strength. It helps you to use your muscles more precise and that is really needed for this dance!
I remember some followers talking about how the dance experience was changed when the leader started to visit the gym regularly. I have though stopped those visits and do all my training at home - the saved money is used for traveling.
An easy guess?   :)

If you want to do something at home check this channel: FitnessBlender  to find your favorit!
https://www.youtube.com/user/FitnessBlender/videos

I have surfed a lot and for this period I will use these two workouts:

I have been on Pilates classes for 5-6 years so by now I know the most important instructions by heart and can understand the new ones clearly enough. This video from YouTube will be on my schedule on Monday-Wednesday.

I have one day rest and on Friday I will go on with Callanetics. I have been working on it quite a long time in the past but it has been difficult to find anything on the web. This is with a Russian instructor who is following the Callanetics principles quite well. I think the original has some more stretches included, but this is totally ok. The workouts in Chinese are more like fitness training with too strong/large repetitions. This will be my companion for two days!   (starts about 6.25)

I you prefere something else check the  FitnessBlender channel to find your favorit!

Basic training for January - February

It has been a long pause. I have done some basic training but not the detailed planed one for tango since March 2013.

I have been dancing and need that stable core. I use tango to boost training for my body - it is so good reason and I belive it, I do the training! To start 2014 I have choosed to continue with pilates and some thougher training without jumps.

For me the best time for training is the morning; it has always been so!

Monday to Wednesday:  Pilates with Renee, a half an hour is enough!

Friday and Saturday: Jilian Michaels Abs workout

Turning and ocho training

During these training days I try to explore different aspects building up a smooth and powerful turn. During the first days I will focus on the muscles around the waist and explore how the turning tension is build up and then released for a relaxed turn with control.

Next section will focus on how hips are moving during the giro circle and how much pivot is needed. During the last days you need to grab a friend to exercise with, to get the shared turning going on!

The two first sections are presented by a leader but the exploring of the turning fits the follower role too.

Day 1

Turning and the waist muscles
In this video Jordi is standing on his right foot and turning to the right. He is standing, looking forward and then turning his uper body to the right, without catching extra power by turning to the left first.  When his uper body reaches the maximum turn or the right direction the hips are following to the same position. Watch the video and test some turns!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRdMpz0_yNU&feature=plcp

The most important thing here is to feel what is happening in your waist area; which parts are active when you turn and how far you can easily turn? What is the signal to release the hips to follow the shoulders to a new position?

The same idea of feeling your body fits the next video too where the pivot comes first. So the hips reach the new position first and when muscles in your waist are released the shoulders come after to the new position.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guKPUpYOWGw&feature=plcp

Please do this several times and make me some company!

Day 2 and 3

Here you have a playlist with the same videos, you get several opportunities to feel the movements and build expertise on your own body. We start with the upperbody turn and the later part of the playlist will start with the pivot.

When doing the first time focus on how you feel in your body, how the muscles are working!

Then continue to do the exercise but think something else - dinner, a film or something to keep your mind occupied!  But let your body stay to the rhythm: turn - maximum twist - release....... and then again!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9mgC0RCgvA&list=PL0l3Nm2MUqkJBPgqfrM6JKqHbidMq6Hkr&feature=plpp_play_all

Day 4 and 5

Turning and the hip direction and feet's too
It is important to make complete turns so the steps are easily recognized as forwardstep, sidestep and backstep. Watch carefully how his hips are facing the chair at asidesteps and turned away, 90 degrees, when he is doing front- or backsteps. To get the rhythm of these steps pay attention to the sidesteps, which always occure in front of the chair and behind. Forwardstep and backstep have their own sides of the chair - always the same if you can keep the pattern!

The first one to test has it's turningpoint on sidestep
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNgQnpBcBJo

Try even the one with frontcross turn!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpGM75MPHs0

To keep our old friends alive take this training too today!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9mgC0RCgvA&list=PL0l3Nm2MUqkJBPgqfrM6JKqHbidMq6Hkr&feature=plpp_play_all

Day 6 and 7

Working with a partner!
Then new part is to combine our single training with a partner, whoever who has the same training interest will be a perfect partner! Guillermo and Fernanda show how to start and then go on around.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2eoMQm56Y4&feature=player_detailpage#t=180s

As a bonus you got som musical step training too in the end of this video!

Hearing and moving

Hey there!
It is now time to activate the next section of musicality training for us. It will be the opportunity to work on the basic rhythmical pattern in tango music and we will check the effects on this rhythm on our feet!

I will here refer as leader step, the one where you step on straight leg and the heel hits the floor first. For follower the step is taken so that the most part of the ball of the foot is down first and usually you step on straight leg too.

The first week we will work with three songs to sharpen your hearing AND let our body react on what we hear. I have noticed that when I express the musical accents which I am aware of, they became clearer and a new level is revealed to be studied. So please wave your HANDS and let your MOUTH and JAW express the music. Later on when we start to walk you will notice that your feet will follow the movements of your jaw – so you listen to the music, let the jaw move along the music and the feet will follow the guidance of your mouth. Yes! This will show our funniest face but to encourage you I will show mine first!

I am doing like this once a day this weeeeeek!     ....... and YOU?

First four days
Here you have the link to the playlist with all three songs. Sit down comfortably on your couch and start to listen and mark what you hear!

Here you have the names of the songs and separate links:

Fifth and sixth
Continue still to follow the songs with your hands and mark the rhythm you hear and keep your mouth in action too!

If you have done the earlier exercices your movements should be so stable by now, so you can use them as an instrument for the next activity. When watching the wideo with Chicho and Juana dancing the El Flete keep your hand near the screen showing what YOU hear and watch what Chichos / Juanas feet are doing!  (Follow just one of them at time)
Are they stepping on all your hand movements?
Are they doing more?
Are they doing less?

Chicho and Juana dancing El Flete

Remember don't check the dance  ;)  check the MUSIC in their feet!

We continue!
Keep up the good work listening and marking the three songs in the playlist! And remember to keep your mouth active!

PLAYLIST

Here you get a version of Bahia Blanca with Chicho and Juana!

Please watch several times from the beginning to about 1.10 and pay attention how they here and there are keeping back their steps, taking them slower.

When you are looking at their steps can you hear in music why they are stepping now, putting down the foot right there? We watch the feet, listen and maybe we get an idea why steps are taken....

What is rhythm made of?

Moi my friend!
Here we have some background for our coming studies in rythm and steps.

This English serie about music has already been helpful for me to get an idea of the different building blocks for the rhythm in music. These aspects have not been easy to understand so I have watched these programs several times. I found these three first section to be the most important - to tell the truth I couldn't resist but I have watched the rest too ;)

2012 August 20 - 31 Training: Follow the music by drawing, checking the changes

Work along with me and refresh facts about tango structure!

Tango structure; phrases and parts. To begin with I will try to find the differences for the petals of this tango flower, listen!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A6X49jA7M0

To draw what you hear is not an artistic thing but it helps to concentrate. At home I can use pen and paper but on bus it will be with my finger on my bag, or something!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlDShx_jSJA

After that it will be nice to work on some songs from Carlitos and Noelias performances, but on a traditional way; on timing! I will write down the time (1:24 and so on) when the music changes. The most important thing here is that we learn to pay attention when the music changes.

2012 July - Summer training

During this training period I will focus on basic musicality awarenes, which includes the rhythm and differences in tones.

Solfege for rhythms
I will use a free program called Solfege to work with the rhythm recognition. It will be 10 mins per day and 4 days per weeks. I have run this exercie some times earlier starting with the easy rhythms but I still have difficulties with the advanced ones. This time it will be those more difficult ones but only two sets per time.

Ear Toner for intervals
I just love this exercise where I try to understand how many notes there is inbetween the two notes sounding after each other. Even here 10 mins per day and 4 days a week.
